To breed Pandas in Minecraft you need to place down a Bamboo plant so it’s tall enough for them to mate on. This is not necessary if they are within three blocks of each other, then they will begin to breed, but this should only be done when the player has multiple pandas that are needed for breeding.
If pandas are placed at least ten blocks apart but are still within range of the bamboo size required, they will mate within 15 minutes if there are no obstructions between them. You want at least two pandas before attempting this, or else it won’t work.
The following materials should be collected before attempting this:
- Two shovels (One per Panda)
- One single block tall Bamboo plant
- Axes (For breaking the Bamboo plants)
- At least two Pandas
- Food for both during breeding.
- Water Bucket (Preferably for both, but one will do if only one has water)
- Lava bucket (optional, recommended) or flint and steel
Once these materials are gathered, start by digging a 3x3x1 hole in the ground; this should be anywhere away from your base (the outer walls). Then place down three Bamboo plants within it to make sure they can breed. Next, take your shovels and place them behind each Panda so they pick them up immediately, then dig out a 2 block tall pillar behind them. This is to stop them from constantly jumping up and down while mating, also known as floating.

Mating will begin immediately if both pandas are within three blocks of the bamboo size required, otherwise, they will take 15 minutes to mate if they are 10 or more blocks apart, even if there’s nothing between them. Place the Panda you want the baby with at the back so it doesn’t jump around while trying to get food off your other one. If this happens, you can use a bucket of water on your panda that is constantly jumping so it does not lose hunger; however, this will only work for about 10 seconds.
If done correctly, you should see both pandas sitting next to each other with hearts above their heads for several minutes. However, they will not drop anything when done mating, so once the hearts disappear, one of them should have a baby panda after another minute.
Mating can be sped up by using an axe next to them to speed up the process, but if you do this it might produce twins or even triplets!
When placing pandas in your Minecraft world without bamboo nearby, simply place a piece of bamboo nearby and wait until it grows tall enough for them to breed on before putting each panda down at least ten blocks away from each other.
Once you are finished breeding, collect all materials used plus everything leftover from food or water needed during the process. Then break any remaining Bamboo plants and tools used, and you should receive a baby panda.
If bamboo is planted in the ground when it’s not tall enough for pandas to breed on, they will eventually eat it and destroy your chances of getting a baby panda anytime soon! Don’t forget to take note of where all four corners of your base are when building it because Pandas can easily get out when left outside overnight. One way around this is to make a wall surrounding the edges of the base; if placed properly they won’t be able to escape without jumping over them.
As with any animal in Minecraft, never leave them surrounded by water as they will drown or they might even swim off somewhere else and die from suffocation. Make sure they have a solid ground to walk on or they might wander off somewhere else or even starve.
When not mated, Pandas can be fed any of the food items that other passive mobs eat such as Carrots, Potatoes and Bread; however, meat is preferred even though it will eventually kill them. They need at least three pieces of food every half-day to stay alive so make sure you know this if you intend to leave them outside overnight!
You cannot tame pandas because they are always passive and friendly towards players and anything that isn’t aggressive toward them. However, they will attack skeletons or any hostile mob nearby if needed by jumping and hitting it until it dies. The best way to stop a Panda from attacking is just to punch it, which will knock it out for a few seconds.
They are very quick compared to other mobs so keep an eye on them when you have more than one at once! They can easily get lost if they wander off somewhere else because they tend to go in different directions.
Pandas only attack the player if provoked or if there’s no other option available. If one is attacked, do not worry because they are very easy to defeat just by punching them until they die. However, if you’re already starting out with your first panda then be careful when fighting them because their health goes up pretty quickly. Any weapon except fist can kill Pandas, but using hands does work best for this mob due to their low damage and high health.
To make pandas stay outside, always leave the doors of your base open because they won’t follow you through them if it’s closed. If your Pandas are still outside after dark, make sure you have a bed for them to sleep on or they will either wander off somewhere else or possibly even starve!
