If you are unsure how “cordless blinds” work, read on. This article will show you the five simple steps to operating a retractable mini blind so that you can retract your slats up and down for privacy or to let in more light.
This is what the manufacturer says about how they work: “Blinds with an automated power system means no cords to tangle, fray, break or cut off fingers! Our innovative design frees you from time-consuming manual window treatments.”.
And this is how it all happens – once the control button on the cordless pull stick that hangs alongside your window is depressed, then pushed up to release the cordless blinds to open, and finally pushed down again to close.

You’ll need the following items:
Control button on your pull-stick that hangs alongside your window, cordless blind slats with cords running through them that are attached at one end to a long metal tube inside of each slat, loops sewn into the top of each vertical blind pan (used for raising/lowering), headrail which is essentially just a strip of fabric wrapped around the aluminium tube at the top edge of each slat, tilt wand which is nothing more than a long metal tube round in cross-section with an L shaped piece near one end inserted into another metal tube round in cross-section, itself having threads so you can screw it into the tube at the top of each slat.
- Step 1: Raise the blinds by rotating the tilt wand clockwise until you cannot turn it anymore. Each time you rotate your tilt wand clockwise, you raise your blinds and let in more light. You can also raise them manually by pulling up on the bottom rail.
- Step 2: Lower the blinds and deploy privacy by rotating the tilt wand counterclockwise. Each time you rotate your tilt wand counterclockwise, you lower your blinds and let in less light. You can also lower them manually by pushing them down on the bottom rail.
- Step 3: Tilt the slats up and down by pulling and pushing along the length of each metal tube running through each slat. This is something you cannot do with corded mini blinds because the cords are tied off at either end of each slat. Cordless mini blinds have an electric hub that runs along the length of each metal tube threading through the middle of each slat:
- Step 4: Raise the blinds up off the window by pulling on each cord running through each slat attached to a long metal tube inside of each slat (there are two cords per slat). To do this, slide your hand along the length of the metal tube threading through the middle of each slat until you reach the end where one or both pull-cords are attached near either end of each slat with an S hook.
- Step 5: Raise the blinds up off the window by pulling back and forth on each metal tube threading through the middle of each slat (there are two per slat). To do this, slide your hand along one or both metal tubes running through the middle of each cordless blind slat until you reach either end where one or both tilt wands are attached to the metal tube with a threaded cap.
- Step 6: Lower the blinds by tilting them down by sliding your hand along either tilt wand until you reach the other end where one or both tilt wands are attached to the metal tube with a threaded cap.
- Step 7: Lower the blinds by pulling back on either cord running through each slat until you reach the other end where one of the pull cords attaches to an S hook on either metal tube threading through the middle of each slat.
- Step 8: Raise or lower your cordless mini blinds by pulling back and forth on either cord running through each slat until you reach the other end where one of the pull cords attaches to an S hook on either metal tube threading through the middle of each slat.
There you have it! Now that you know how do cordless mini blinds work, happy window dressing!
